The Handheld Signing Math & Science Dictionaries for Deaf
and Hard of Hearing Museum Visitors Research Project
This video clip shows a hearing mother standing in front of the "View From Space" activity. One of the hard of hearing children had previously explained that she saw a piece of lettuce floating in the water in the nearby "Whose Woods are These?" activity. The mother locates the term lettuce in the SSP. After learning its sign, she demonstrates it to her daughter and then explains her ideas about why that particular sign is used for the term.
Dictionary Use: The family watches a term being signed. The parent then uses the information to show and explain the importance of the sign as a visual description of the term.
