The Handheld Signing Math & Science Dictionaries for Deaf
and Hard of Hearing Museum Visitors Research Project
This video clip shows a deaf child and her Big Sister from the Big Brothers, Big Sisters program doing the "Hot or Cold?" activity. First the deaf child reads the activity directions and does the activity with signed support from the adult. As they read the explanatory text on the infomation panel, the adult points out a term and identifies it on the Word List. The child explains her understanding of the term. Then the adult promts her to look it up in the dictionary. They both watch the signed term and definition together. They then discuss what they have learned in the context of the activity.
Dictionary Use: The child watches a signed term and definition to learn the sign and understand the meaning of a term with which she is not familiar. The group members engage in discussion about the activity using their newly acquired signing vocabulary.
