The Handheld Signing Math & Science Dictionaries for Deaf
and Hard of Hearing Museum Visitors Research Project

This video clip shows a hearing mother, her deaf daugher, and hearing niece are at the "Swing" activity. The mother tries to get her daughter to look up a term on the Word List with her. The mother suggests they look up the term gravity. However, the child had already looked it up during a prior visit. She looks up the term short instead. The deaf child locates the term in the SSP and shows it to her mother being signed. She then displays the definition and shows it to her mother. The deaf child's hearing cousin approaches and uses the Word List to identify a term that she is interested in looking up. She locates the term angle and views it being signed. The hearing mother then asks her niece to share what she has learned.

Dictionary Use: The family watches signed terms and definitions to learn the signs and meanings of terms.
